Remake Patek Philippe PP Calatrava 5227R-001: A Guide to Specialty Stores Availability

Alright, let’s talk about this watch project I took on. I decided to remake a Patek Philippe Calatrava, specifically the 5227R-001 model. Now, I’m no expert on these fancy watches, but I like a good challenge, so I dove right in.

Getting Started

First thing I did was get a good look at the original. This 5227R-001, it’s a real looker. It’s got this classic, clean design that just screams “expensive”. The case is 39 mm wide and 9.24 mm thick. I started to look for parts I could use by ordering some watch parts online, and I tried to get as close as I could to those measurements.

The Case

The case was probably the most important part. I found that it’s supposed to be made of rose gold, which, yeah, wasn’t going to happen on my budget. But I found a pretty decent rose gold-plated case that was just the right size. It’s got a sapphire crystal case back, which is a fancy way of saying you can see the inside of the watch. The real one has this cool dust cover with an invisible hinge, but I had to skip that part. Ain’t nobody got time to figure out invisible hinges.

The Movement

Next up was the movement. Now, the original has a self-winding mechanism. I found a cheap automatic movement online, and after I ordered it, I just hoped it would fit, and it did! I spent hours trying to get that thing in there. But hey, it’s in there, and it’s ticking!

The Dial and Hands

The dial was pretty straightforward. It’s this simple, off-white color with gold markers. I found a similar dial and some gold hands that looked pretty close to the original. Putting those on was kind of a pain, especially the tiny second hand, but I managed it after, I don’t know, maybe a couple of tries, after I ordered some spares online.

The Strap

I grabbed a leather strap, brown, just like the original. I figured, leather is leather, right? This part was easy, just had to attach it to the case, and done. This is the easiest part of the whole thing.

The Final Product

So, after all that, did I end up with a perfect replica of the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227R-001? Nope. But did I have fun? Absolutely. It’s not perfect, but it’s my own little version of this fancy watch. It tells the time, looks somewhat similar, and I made it myself. And you know what? That’s pretty cool.

Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun seeing it all come together. Plus, now I can kind of understand why people get so into these fancy watches. They’re like little pieces of art that you can wear on your wrist. If you’re thinking about trying something like this, I’d say go for it. Just be prepared to spend some time, and maybe some money, on it. And don’t expect to get it perfect on your first try. But hey, that’s half the fun, right?

  • Case diameter: Approximately 39 mm
  • Thickness: Around 9.24 mm
  • Strap: Leather, brown

That’s all for now. Maybe I’ll try another watch project in the future. Who knows?
