So, I got this itch to remake a Prada bag, you know, the Galleria Saffiano one? The big one. It all started when I was browsing online, just window shopping, and I saw it. That beautiful, sleek design. I thought, “I bet I could do that.” I’ve always been pretty crafty, and I’ve dabbled in leatherwork before, so why not? I started by doing some research. I spent hours, and I mean hours, looking up everything about this bag.

Turns out, it’s this special type of treated leather that old man Mario Prada himself patented. And get this, the Galleria style was launched back in 2007. I also found that it’s called the Saffiano Lux Large Double-Zip Tote on some sites, and I think it is the same as the Galleria tote, just in a bigger size.

First things first, I needed to find the right leather. It had to be Saffiano, which is basically real leather that’s been treated and stamped to get that signature cross-hatch pattern. I learned that it’s super durable, water-resistant, and scratch-resistant. Not just any leather would do. I hit up a bunch of local leather shops and finally found the perfect stuff. It felt right, looked right, and had that stiffness I was looking for. I bought a big piece, just to be safe.

  • Next up, the pattern. This was tricky. I couldn’t find an exact pattern for the Galleria bag anywhere. So, I did what any sane person would do: I bought a cheap knock-off online. I know, I know, but it was for research purposes! I carefully took it apart, piece by piece, and used the parts as a template to create my own pattern. I labeled every part so I wouldn’t make mistakes when cutting the leather. I made adjustments, of course, because I wanted mine to be perfect.
  • Cutting the leather was nerve-wracking. One wrong move and the whole thing could be ruined. I took my time, measured twice, cut once, all that jazz. Slowly but surely, the pieces started to come together. I had the front, the back, the sides, the bottom, all laid out. It was starting to look like a bag!

  • Then came the sewing. Oh boy, the sewing. This was the hardest part. Saffiano leather is tough, so I had to use a heavy-duty needle and strong thread. My fingers were sore, and I broke a few needles along the way, but I pushed through. I hand-stitched most of it, which took forever, but I wanted that authentic, handmade feel. I also used my old sewing machine for the long, straight seams. Teamwork makes the dream work, right?

Final Touches

Once the body of the bag was assembled, I added the hardware. I managed to find some good quality buckles and zippers online that looked pretty close to the real deal. Attaching them was fiddly work, but I got there in the end.

The lining was the final piece of the puzzle. I chose a soft, luxurious fabric that felt nice to the touch. I carefully stitched it in, making sure there were no wrinkles or loose threads. And then, there it was. My very own, handmade version of the Prada Galleria Saffiano bag. It wasn’t perfect, but I was proud of it. I used it every day, and it was quite a conversation starter.

Was it worth it? Absolutely. Would I do it again? Maybe not. It was a lot of work. But hey, I learned a ton, and now I have a pretty cool bag to show for it. Plus, I can say I made it myself, which is pretty awesome. It was a great experience and I want to share it with all of you.
