Recreate the Iconic YSL JUNE BOX BAG: An Affordable Remake of Yves Saint Laurents Classic Style

Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another project. This time, I got my hands on some leather and decided to try my hand at recreating the classic Yves Saint Laurent YSL June Box Bag. Yeah, the one with the fancy gold logo. I saw it online, and I just thought, “I could probably make that.” Spoiler alert: it wasn’t as easy as I thought, but hey, we got there in the end.

So, first things first, I needed to get the materials. I went down to the local leather shop and picked up some really smooth, black lambskin. Feels amazing, by the way. I also grabbed some gold-colored hardware for the logo and clasp, thread, needles, the whole nine yards. I basically just told the guy at the shop what I was doing, and he pointed me in the right direction. God bless that man.

Next up was figuring out the pattern. Now, I’m no expert pattern maker, but I found some similar bag patterns online and kind of mashed them together to get the shape and size of the June Box Bag. It took a few tries, some wasted paper, and a lot of measuring, but eventually, I had a pattern that I thought would work.

Cutting and Sewing

Cutting the leather was a bit nerve-wracking. I laid out the lambskin, traced my pattern onto it with chalk, and then very, very carefully cut out each piece. I used a really sharp rotary cutter, which helped a lot. One wrong move, and I’d have to start all over. No pressure, right?

Then came the sewing. I dusted off my old sewing machine, which I hadn’t used in ages, and got to work. Stitching the pieces together was actually pretty satisfying. The straight lines were easy enough, but the curves were a bit tricky. I had to go really slow and make sure everything was lined up perfectly. It’s all about patience, people.

The bag started to take shape, and I have to say, it was looking pretty good! I added a lining to the inside using some black fabric I had lying around. I thought this would give it a more polished look and also make it more durable. Then I sewed this into the bag as well.

The Logo and Finishing Touches

  • The YSL logo was the hardest part. I had bought a gold-colored YSL emblem but there is no way to sew them in the original bag. I used some strong adhesive to attach it to the front flap. It wasn’t perfect, but it did the trick.
  • Once the logo was on, I attached the clasp and the strap. The strap is just a long piece of leather that I folded over and stitched together. Simple but effective.
  • Finally, I went over all the seams with a leather conditioner to protect the leather and give it a nice sheen.

And there you have it! My homemade version of the YSL June Box Bag. It’s not an exact replica, but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot about working with leather. Plus, now I have a cool new bag to show off! Who knows, maybe I’ll start taking custom orders. Just kidding… unless?

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this little journey into my DIY bag-making adventure. Let me know what you think in the comments. And if you’ve ever tried making your own bag, I’d love to hear about it! Peace out!
